Our Story

Nola and Kenny Rhodes have had several other businesses here in the Valley, mostly based around building with local woodproducts. They started Rare Bears in 2013 on thier gorgeous home-set locality to share their passion for beautiful and interesting old, new, crafted, and discovered items....and plants.

Located 3 miles up Grave Creek Road on Stoken Road, Rare Bears is a wonderful trip off the highway into a neighborhood that is a destination or part of an excursion. Include it in your exploration into the Therriault highcountry for hiking, snowmobiling, fishing, huckleberrying, and camping. Stop by before heading to the local HA) Brewery for some of their fantastic brews and a bite to eat at Jax Pizza wagon.

Stop by to see the contributions of 42 consignees, many of them local artists. Nola displays the leather belts and cuffs of Peter Laffin and bracelets by Tanya Sherwood. There's also colorful knitted and crocheted hats, scarfs, and mittens and jewlery from a number of local artists. The painted, photo and graphic art of locally known and admired Karen Carpenter, John Ellis and Becky Evans mix well on the walls with the work of Julia Burlingham's Upicky creations, as they will do in your and your friends' homes. Get a taste of local history of the Yaak and Troy with Jim Calvi's books on history and archeology. For your rustic taste, Duane Erie has a selection of his log furniture. And, they also offer the welded Steampunk-esque furniture and home decorations by Josh Sherwood. And more...they're always adding more!

In Rare Bears choice of collectables you are liable to find something to fit your style. They have collectible glassware and kitchen gadgets, dolls, Lionel trains, antique furniture, and bronzes by Mary Cooper Back. For your outdoorsy taste in decoration there's a fine selection of taxidermy, collected locally and from around the world. Come see what's here and what's new and different.

Don't miss the houseplants. Nola's love of plants and gardening are evident in the beautiful, unique and artistic plants that she has nurtured. Some of our favorites are the Night Blooming Ceres “Mark Twain,” the Hindu Rope Hoya, and the famous African Violets that Nola is known for. Plants for any part of your house from sun to shade.
