Poor planning could easily have been the end of our adventure as well as our very lives. We hear about mental snafus all the time. In a hurry or through exhaustion, a hiker slips, falling off a cliff in Glacier National Park. Snowmobilers run up a steep slope, triggering an avalanche that buries them under ten feet of compacted snow.
I let my guard down from the moment I said, “Yes”. I didn’t grab my backpack with the forest map, bear spray, fire making tools, and rain gear. You see the problem, right? The weather can change from sunny and eighty degrees to freezing in July, but all my tools for survival sat in my garage.

Forrest Gump taught us that life is like a box of chocolates, but in Northwest Montana we aren’t limited to a single sweet choice. This country is a paradise offering sustenance in many ways. A few weeks ago, I joined two friends in a morel mushroom hunt.
